Bekal Resort Development Corporation Ltd. (BRDC) is a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) formed by the Government of Kerala in 1995 with a vision to develop Bekal as an international beach tourism destination. Strategically located in Kasaragod, the northernmost district of Kerala, Bekal is endowed with unique geographical, historical, and cultural assets. BRDC plays a pivotal role in transforming this naturally blessed location into a structured, eco-friendly, and culturally integrated tourism zone.
The development initiative aims not only to boost tourism but also to provide sustainable economic opportunities for the local population through employment generation, infrastructure development, and responsible tourism practices. Bekal is a picturesque coastal town located along the Arabian Sea. It is famous for its historical Bekal Fort, tranquil backwaters, clean beaches, and rich biodiversity.
Key Highlights of the Destination:
- Bekal Fort: A massive, well-preserved fort built in the 17th century, it offers panoramic sea views and stands as a symbol of the region's heritage.
- Bekal Beach: A popular destination for both leisure and cultural tourism, the beach is maintained with walkways, seating, and viewing decks.
- Backwaters: The Valiyaparamba and Kottancheri backwaters offer immense potential for inland waterway tourism and houseboat experiences.
- Temples and Mosques: The region is known for its religious harmony and features ancient temples, mosques, and churches that enrich the visitor experience.
- Cultural Attractions: Art forms like Theyyam and Kolkali, and festivals such as Vishu and Onam attract cultural tourists.
Bekal is part of the North Malabar cultural belt, and tourism here is positioned around heritage, nature, and wellness.
Tourism potential in North Kerala remained underutilized until the late 20th century. To address this, the Kerala Government established BRDC to channelize planned tourism development in Bekal. The region was selected for focused development under the Ministry of Tourism’s “Destination Development Scheme,” with BRDC as the nodal implementing agency.
BRDC's mandate includes:
- Acquisition and planned development of land for tourism use.
- Developing core infrastructure such as roads, water supply, power, sanitation, and solid waste management.
- Attracting private investments in hospitality and leisure sectors.
- Promoting eco-tourism, cultural preservation, and responsible tourism models.
Over the years, BRDC has developed key public infrastructure, facilitated resort investments, and helped position Bekal on the tourism map of India.
