Local Self-Government Departments
Since 2018, Oleena has been actively engaged in the Bekal Tourism Destination Cleaning Project, an ongoing initiative aimed at enhancing cleanliness, hygiene, and the overall appeal of Bekal as a premier tourism spot. Recognizing Bekal’s potential as a national and international destination, Oleena works tirelessly to maintain public spaces, beaches, and heritage areas, ensuring they remain welcoming for visitors while promoting environmental responsibility.
The project goes beyond mere cleaning. Oleena collaborates closely with local self-government departments (LSGDs), tourism authorities, and local communities, creating a shared vision of sustainable tourism. Volunteers and staff regularly organize clean-up drives, remove waste, and ensure proper disposal, while also educating locals and tourists about the significance of hygiene and environmental care.
By integrating community engagement, strategic waste management, and environmental awareness, the initiative aims to position Bekal as a model for responsible tourism, where cleanliness, sustainability, and community pride go hand in hand. Over the years, the project has become a symbol of Oleena’s commitment to preserving Kerala’s natural and cultural beauty, while supporting economic growth through tourism.
Bekal is a picturesque coastal town located along the Arabian Sea. It is famous for its historical Bekal Fort, tranquil backwaters, clean beaches, and rich biodiversity.
Key Highlights of the Destination:
- Bekal Fort and surrounding beach areas — iconic historical and tourist spots.
- Coastal and waterfront zones — high visitor footfall demanding constant hygiene management.
- Local markets and streets near tourism hubs — focus on cleanliness for visitor satisfaction.
- Community gathering areas — promoting sustainable practices among locals and visitors.
- Scenic viewpoints and parks — maintaining natural beauty and safety for tourists.
Bekal is part of the North Malabar cultural belt, and tourism here is positioned around heritage, nature, and wellness.
Bekal, with its rich cultural heritage and pristine beaches, attracts thousands of tourists annually. However, littering, unmanaged waste, and lack of hygiene awareness threatened its reputation. Recognizing this, Oleena, with support from local government bodies, LSGDs, and tourism authorities, initiated the project in 2018 to enhance the area’s cleanliness, promote sustainable tourism, and inspire local communities to actively participate in maintaining their environment.
Source of FundingThe Bekal Tourism Destination Cleaning Project is primarily supported by Local Self-Government Departments (LSGDs) and tourism authorities in the Kasaragod district. These authorities provide funding, logistical support, and administrative guidance to facilitate the effective cleaning and maintenance of public and tourist areas.
In addition, partner organizations and community volunteers contribute resources, manpower, and expertise, ensuring the successful execution of cleaning drives and awareness initiatives.
Oleena also provides internal support through project management, volunteer coordination, and operational oversight, enabling efficient implementation of the initiative.
This multi-tiered funding and support structure ensures the sustainability and long-term impact of the project, enhancing the tourism appeal of Bekal while promoting environmental stewardship and community engagement.
Oleena conducts educational campaigns and workshops for local residents and tourists, emphasizing the importance of hygiene, responsible waste disposal, and collective efforts to keep Bekal clean and welcoming.
