Waste Management Project under Suchitwa Mission

Since 2015, Oleena has been an empanelled NGO under Suchitwa Mission, actively implementing waste management systems, handling special waste types, and promoting community awareness. The project focuses on sustainable collection, disposal, and recycling practices while building local capacity to ensure cleaner, healthier, and environmentally responsible communities.

Project handled for Suchitwa Mission / Government of Kerala from 10 Mar 2015 to 10 Oct 2025.

Suchitwa Mission / Government of Kerala

Oleena’s Waste Management Project, empanelled under the Suchitwa Mission, is a flagship initiative addressing the growing need for efficient and sustainable waste management in Kerala. Since 2015, Oleena has worked closely with local authorities, communities, and institutions to implement effective waste collection, segregation, and recycling systems, particularly for waste types not typically handled by the local municipal services, such as construction and demolition debris, hair waste, and certain medical wastes.

As an empanelled NGO, Oleena plays a multi-faceted role: training and building capacity, implementing waste management systems, engaging communities, and monitoring and evaluating outcomes to ensure sustainable practices. The project integrates technical solutions with grassroots awareness, empowering communities to participate actively in proper waste disposal and environmental stewardship.

Through consistent efforts, Oleena has strengthened the capacity of local bodies and community volunteers to manage waste responsibly. Training sessions and workshops ensure that stakeholders understand best practices, while the actual implementation of systems provides hands-on experience in sustainable waste management.

This initiative is transforming neighborhoods, public spaces, and institutions across Kerala, making them cleaner, safer, and more environmentally responsible. By combining education, infrastructure, and monitoring, Oleena ensures long-term impact and contributes meaningfully to the goals of the Suchitwa Mission.

Key Highlights of the Project:

  • Empanelled under Suchitwa Mission since 2015.
  • Handles specialized waste: construction, demolition, hair, and certain medical wastes.
  • Implements community-based waste management systems.
  • Provides training and capacity building for local bodies and volunteers.
  • Conducts monitoring and evaluation to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
  • Drives community engagement and awareness programs.
  • Collaborates with local authorities, municipalities, and institutions.
  • Promotes sustainable practices and environmentally responsible waste disposal.

Kerala faces increasing challenges in managing diverse types of waste, including construction debris, hair waste from salons, and certain medical wastes that are not typically collected by standard municipal services. Improper disposal of such waste can lead to environmental degradation, health hazards, and reduced community hygiene, affecting both urban and semi-urban areas.

Recognizing this need, the Suchitwa Mission empanelled NGOs like Oleena to bridge the gap in comprehensive waste management. Since 2015, Oleena has been tasked with designing, implementing, and managing waste management systems for specialized waste types, while ensuring alignment with government guidelines and environmental regulations.

The project was initiated in collaboration with local self-government departments (LSGDs), municipalities, and health authorities, providing a structured framework to handle, segregate, transport, and process waste responsibly. Empanelment under the Suchitwa Mission allowed Oleena to leverage technical expertise, community connections, and volunteer networks to create sustainable solutions tailored to local needs.

The initiative focuses on both technical intervention and capacity building. Training sessions equip local staff and volunteers with knowledge of safe handling, segregation, recycling methods, and legal compliance for specialized wastes. Regular monitoring and evaluation ensure adherence to standards and help identify areas for improvement.

Through these efforts, Oleena has enhanced public health, reduced environmental pollution, and strengthened community engagement. The project demonstrates how collaboration between government, NGOs, and communities can result in effective, sustainable waste management that improves the quality of life and safeguards Kerala’s environment for future generations.

The Waste Management Project under the Suchitwa Mission is primarily funded by the Government of Kerala, which allocates financial resources to empanelled NGOs for the effective implementation of waste management initiatives.

In addition to government funding, Local Self-Government Departments (LSGDs) and municipalities provide in-kind support and co-funding in the form of logistics, infrastructure, and manpower, facilitating smooth operations at the grassroots level.

The project also benefits from collaborations with partner organizations and corporate social responsibility (CSR) contributions, which may supplement the project budget for awareness campaigns, specialized equipment, and training programs.

Furthermore, Oleena contributes internal resources, including administrative support, volunteer mobilization, and operational oversight, ensuring efficient and sustainable project execution.

This multi-source funding model ensures the financial sustainability and operational efficiency of the Waste Management Project, enabling Oleena to achieve its objectives in implementing effective waste management systems, promoting community awareness, and fostering environmental responsibility across Kerala.

Oleena’s Waste Management Project emphasizes community awareness as a key component of sustainable waste solutions. Beyond implementing systems and handling specialized wastes, the NGO actively engages with residents, institutions, and local authorities to educate them on responsible waste disposal practices and the importance of maintaining a clean environment.

Workshops, training sessions, and interactive campaigns are conducted across municipalities, panchayats, schools, and community centers. Participants learn about segregation at source, recycling techniques, and safe handling of construction, hair, and medical wastes. Demonstrations and hands-on sessions ensure practical understanding of waste management procedures.

Special focus is given to capacity building among local body staff and volunteers, enabling them to manage waste efficiently and monitor compliance. Residents are encouraged to participate in cleanliness drives, adopt sustainable habits, and report irregularities in waste disposal practices.

By spreading awareness about the environmental, health, and social impacts of improper waste management, Oleena fosters community ownership of sanitation practices. Awareness campaigns also highlight how collective effort can prevent pollution, protect public health, and enhance the aesthetic appeal of neighborhoods.

Over time, these programs have instilled a culture of responsibility, where communities actively contribute to maintaining cleanliness, supporting government initiatives, and sustaining the outcomes of implemented waste management systems. By combining education, engagement, and practical implementation, Oleena ensures that the impact of the project extends far beyond technical solutions, creating lasting behavioral change and stronger, healthier communities.
